Moving

Moving from Chicago to the Western Suburbs

Plenty of buyers in the western suburbs are coming from Chicago, usually for more space, a yard and schools. The move is very doable, but a few things work differently than in the city.

Your commute changes shape

You’ll likely trade a short CTA ride for Metra. Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Winfield and West Chicago run to Ogilvie on the Union Pacific West line, and Naperville runs to Union Station on the BNSF line. Check the schedule for your actual work hours and factor in parking or a walk to the station.

Property taxes look different

Suburban property tax bills are often a bigger share of monthly costs than city buyers expect. Look at the actual tax bill for any home you’re considering, not just the price.

Schools are tied to the address

In the suburbs your address determines your school, and district lines don’t always follow town lines. Check each specific property.

Timing the sale of your city home

If you own in Chicago, you’ll likely be selling and buying at the same time. Our guide to buying and selling at once covers the options. Walker can coordinate the suburban purchase and connect you with a trusted Chicago listing agent if you need one.
